Kotor's hop-on hop-off bus loops out to Risan and back, taking in a Roman mosaic of the god of sleep, a baroque waterfront town, and a beach stop along the way – a practical way to cover ground around the bay without driving yourself.

Risan's mosaic of the god of sleep

The route's furthest stop, Risan, is the oldest settlement on the Bay of Kotor, once the seat of the Illyrian Queen Teuta before it grew into a prosperous Roman town. Its Roman-era mosaics, part of a villa accidentally uncovered by road workers in the early 20th century, weren't properly excavated until 1957 – three years of work eventually revealed five mosaic panels. The best-known, in what was the villa's main bedroom, shows Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep, reclining on cushions – the only known mosaic anywhere in the world to depict him, and rendered in five colours where the other panels use fewer.

Perast and a beach break

Back toward Kotor, the bus stops in Perast, a baroque waterfront town built by sea captains' wealth, where the ticket includes entry to the Maritime Museum alongside time to walk the harbourfront and narrow streets. The final stop, Bajova Kula, is a straightforward beach break – sun loungers, a swim, and food – before the bus loops back into Kotor.

Worth booking, or not

The honest read: this is a practical way to reach Risan and Perast by road without renting a car, and the beach stop is a genuine bonus if you want a swim built into the day. It's not going to be the most memorable thing you do in Montenegro, though, and reviews reflect a solid rather than outstanding experience. If the history is the main draw, pair it with a proper guided option, or see Perast from the water instead on the Bay of Kotor boat tour, which reaches it by speedboat rather than road.

Booking

The hop-on hop-off ticket covers the full Kotor–Risan–Perast–Bajova Kula loop, with an audio guide on board and Perast's Maritime Museum included. Buses run roughly every 30 minutes, so there's no need to plan around a fixed schedule. Want the Old Town covered on foot too? The Old Town walking tour covers the Sea Gate, Square of Arms and St. Tryphon's Cathedral in about 70 minutes.
