Things to do in Slovenia

Slovenia packs a lot into a small country – a walkable capital, one of Europe's most famous lakes, and a cave system with its own underground train, all within an hour or two of each other.

Ljubljana, Slovenia's small and walkable capital, is the natural base – close enough to reach the country's two biggest draws in a single day trip each.

Postojna Cave, one of the largest show caves in the world, comes with its own 19th-century underground train and a resident population of olms – pale, blind salamanders nicknamed "human fish." Lake Bled, with its church-topped island and clifftop castle, is the other unmissable day trip, both within about an hour of the capital.
