Stari Most and the Old Town are Mostar's own attraction – a 16th-century Ottoman bridge shelled down in 1993 and rebuilt by 2004, with a bazaar, a mosque and a smaller "trial" bridge around it.

From there, four day trips cover the rest of Herzegovina within about an hour's drive. Kravica Waterfalls is a 25-metre wall of cascades where, unlike some of the region's other beauty spots, swimming is actually encouraged. Blagaj Tekija, the closest trip at just 12 kilometres out, is a 500-year-old dervish monastery built into a cliff at the source of the Buna spring. Počitelj is a fortified Ottoman-era village founded by a medieval Bosnian king, still lived in today. And Medjugorje is the pilgrimage town built around six children's reported 1981 vision of the Virgin Mary – a site the Vatican still hasn't officially confirmed, even as tens of millions of pilgrims keep visiting.

Bosnia and Herzegovina uses the convertible mark (BAM/KM), not the euro – worth knowing before budgeting for cash-only entrance fees at the smaller sites.
