Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina's most-visited city, centres on Stari Most – a 16th-century Ottoman bridge shelled down in the 1990s war and rebuilt stone for stone by 2004 – with an Old Town bazaar and mosque built up around it.

From Mostar, the country's best day trips sit within about an hour's drive: Kravica Waterfalls, a swimmable 25-metre cascade on the Trebižat river; the Blagaj Tekija, a 500-year-old dervish monastery built directly into a cliff at a karst spring; the fortified hillside village of Počitelj, founded in 1383; and Medjugorje, the Catholic pilgrimage town that's grown up around a reported 1981 Marian apparition.
