Blagaj Tekija day trip from Mostar

Blagaj Tekija is a 500-year-old dervish monastery that looks built directly into the cliff behind it – standing at the exact spot where the Buna river, one of the most powerful karst springs in Europe, pours out of the rock roughly 12 kilometres south-east of Mostar.

The tekija was built around 1520-1522 by Dervishes of the Bektashi order, a mystic branch of Sufi Islam, right where the Buna emerges from beneath a limestone cliff that rises roughly 200 metres above it. A tekija (tekke) is a Sufi lodge for spiritual retreat and ritual practice, distinct in purpose from a standard mosque, and Blagaj's functioned continuously as one for four centuries until its last sheikh, Sejdo Šehović, died in 1925. The building's rooms are still furnished in period style – low cushioned seating, rugs, and religious artefacts – and a small entrance fee lets visitors walk through them today.

One of Europe's biggest karst springs

The Buna itself is the real spectacle: an underground river that surfaces suddenly and forcefully from a cave mouth at the cliff's base, immediately forming a short waterfall before flowing past the tekija's terrace and joining the Neretva a few kilometres downstream. The cave the water emerges from has never been fully explored – divers have mapped over 200 metres into it without finding the source chamber. The combination of the spring's volume, the cliff towering above, and the pale stone building tucked into the base of it is what makes Blagaj one of the most photographed sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina, war-era damage notwithstanding – the site escaped the destruction that hit Počitelj and Mostar's own Stari Most relatively lightly.

Visiting today

Terrace restaurants line the riverbank facing the tekija, serving trout pulled from the Buna itself – a popular lunch stop after the monastery visit. Because Blagaj is the closest of Mostar's major day trips, at only 15-20 minutes' drive, it's easy to combine with a same-day visit to Kravica Waterfalls or Počitelj further south, and most guided day trips from Mostar build the route this way rather than treating Blagaj as a standalone trip. Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is expected inside the tekija itself, in keeping with its status as an active religious site.
