Ljubljana Castle sits on a hill above the city, reachable by funicular, with a history that includes 80 years as a prison. A guided walking tour covers the Old Town below it, including the Dragon Bridge and the Art Nouveau architecture that followed a 1895 earthquake.

Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, an easy day trip from the capital, pair one of the world's largest show caves – reached partly by its own 19th-century underground train – with a castle built directly into a cliff face nearby.

Lake Bled, Slovenia's best-known image, is a similarly easy day trip in the other direction, and Vintgar Gorge, a short boardwalk canyon just outside Bled, pairs naturally with it.
