Ljubljana Castle has watched over the capital from its hilltop since the 11th century, though its history isn't all medieval grandeur – for 80 years under Austrian rule, it operated as a prison rather than a seat of power.

A longer history than it looks

The first fortress on the site dates to the 11th century, rebuilt in the 12th, with the layout visitors see today largely shaped by a 15th-century overhaul – most of the standing buildings are from the 16th and 17th centuries. Its least glamorous chapter came later: from 1815 to 1895, it served as a prison under Austrian rule, a detail easy to miss walking through what now feels like a straightforwardly medieval site.

Getting up, and what's inside

A funicular railway, built in 2006, covers the climb up Castle Hill in under a minute and is included as an option on most tickets, alongside the option to walk up instead. Inside, the "Time Machine" tour walks visitors through six defining periods of the castle's history using the buildings themselves rather than a conventional museum layout, and the grounds also hold St. George's Chapel – dating to the 15th century and consecrated in 1489, dedicated to Ljubljana's patron saint and rebuilt in Baroque style around 1747 – a history exhibition, and, a genuinely unexpected find in a medieval fortress, the Museum of Puppetry, reflecting Slovenia's strong tradition in the art form.

Booking

The castle entry ticket with optional funicular ride is valid for the day and covers self-paced exploring, with an audio guide available in multiple languages. It's a popular, frequently sold-out attraction, so book ahead rather than assuming same-day tickets will be available.
