Day Trips in Ohrid
Ohrid's Old Town climbs up to Samuel's Fortress, a hilltop citadel first fortified in antiquity and rebuilt into its current form by a medieval Bulgarian tsar who made Ohrid his capital. A lakeside path leads from the Old Town to the Church of St. John at Kaneo, a small stone church balanced on a cliff jutting into the lake.
A Lake Ohrid boat tour sees the fortress and the clifftop church from the water instead – worth doing on a lake old enough (up to 1.9 million years) to have evolved roughly 200 species found nowhere else on Earth. Along the shore, the Bay of Bones Museum rebuilds a Bronze Age pile-dwelling village on the exact spot its remains were excavated from the lake bed, and further south, a day trip reaches St. Naum Monastery, founded in 905 at the lake's edge near the Albanian border.
North Macedonia uses the Macedonian denar (MKD), not the euro – it's an EU candidate country but not yet a member.
