Ohrid, North Macedonia's most-visited city, pairs a UNESCO-listed Old Town with Samuel's Fortress, a hilltop citadel a medieval Bulgarian tsar rebuilt into his imperial capital around the turn of the 11th century.

A lakeside path connects the Old Town to the Church of St. John at Kaneo, perched on a cliff over the water, while a Lake Ohrid boat tour covers the same landmarks from the lake itself – one of the oldest and deepest lakes on Earth, home to roughly 200 species found nowhere else. Further along the shore, the Bay of Bones Museum reconstructs a Bronze Age lake-village on stilts, and a day trip reaches St. Naum Monastery, founded in 905 near the Albanian border.
