Lake Bled day trip from Ljubljana

Lake Bled is the single most photographed spot in Slovenia, and the reason is obvious in person: an alpine lake, the country's only natural island sitting in the middle of it with a church on top, and a thousand-year-old castle on a cliff above the water, all visible at once.

Getting to the island

The classic way out to Bled Island is by pletna, a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat rowed standing up by a pletnar – a role that's been passed down through specific local families since the boats first appeared in the 1500s. Renting your own small rowing boat is the cheaper, DIY alternative if you'd rather set your own pace. Either way, the island itself means climbing 99 steps up from the boat landing to the Church of the Assumption of Mary – also known locally as the Church of Mary the Queen, with a place of worship on the site dating back to the 9th century, though the building standing today is largely 17th-century. Tradition holds that ringing its "wishing bell" – especially for a groom carrying his new bride up the steps – makes a wish come true.

The castle above it all

Bled Castle dates to 1011, making it the oldest castle in Slovenia, built directly onto a cliff above the lake for the defensive position as much as the view. It's a genuinely different vantage point on the same scene the island offers from below.

Getting there

Lake Bled is about 50km from Ljubljana, under an hour by car, comfortable as a single day trip from the capital.

Booking

A guided day trip from Ljubljana covers return transport and a guide who fills in the history at both the island and the castle. It's one of the most-booked day trips out of the capital and can sell out on the best-weather days, so book a few days ahead in peak season.
