Vintgar Gorge is a 1.6km canyon near Lake Bled, walked almost entirely on wooden boardwalks bolted to the cliff face a few metres above the turquoise Radovna River below.
A boardwalk over a century old
The gorge was identified in 1891 by local photographer Benedikt Lergetporer and Jakob Žumer, the mayor and cartographer of nearby Gorje, and by 1893 more than 500 metres of bridges and galleries had been built to make the canyon safely walkable – it's remained open to visitors, on and off, for well over a century since. The canyon itself runs up to 250 metres deep, with the boardwalk hugging the rock face above water that stays a striking turquoise for the full walk.
Getting there
Vintgar Gorge sits about 4km from Lake Bled, close enough that most visitors treat it as an add-on to a Bled day trip rather than a separate destination. E-bike rental from Bled is a popular way to cover both the gorge and the surrounding countryside in one outing.
Booking
A self-guided e-bike experience from Bled covers the ride out to the gorge and back, leaving the pace and stops up to you rather than following a fixed guided schedule. Pair it with Lake Bled itself if you're already making the trip out from Ljubljana.
