Split Game of Thrones walking tour

The cellars beneath Diocletian's Palace look almost too atmospheric to be real – stone vaults, cool air, the kind of underground hall a set designer would build from scratch. HBO didn't build it. It's the actual 4th-century substructure of a Roman emperor's palace, and for three seasons of Game of Thrones it was Meereen, the city where Daenerys Targaryen freed the slaves and chained her dragons.

Where Meereen really was

HBO filmed around Split between 2014 and 2016, across Seasons 4 to 6, building the fictional Slaver's Bay city of Meereen out of real Croatian locations: the palace's underground cellars for Daenerys's throne room and dragon dungeon, the medieval Klis Fortress twenty minutes inland for Meereen's exterior walls, and Papalićeva Street – a narrow lane cutting straight through the palace – for the alley chase during the Season 4 slave uprising. This tour sticks to the Split locations, so Klis is usually a separate trip if you want the full set.

History first, filming locations layered on

This isn't a tour built purely for fans – it's a genuine walk through Diocletian's Palace, the same Roman retirement complex that grew into modern Split, with the show's filming spots pointed out as you go rather than substituted for the history. Skip-the-line entry through a separate access point is the practical advantage over just wandering in on your own, since the cellars get busy with regular sightseers as well as fans tracking down the exact spot the dragons were chained.

Booking

The Game of Thrones & History Walking Tour runs 100 to 105 minutes in a small group. If the filming-location angle isn't the priority, the standard Diocletian's Palace walking tour covers the same site's Roman history at a similar length and price. Pair either with the electric tuk-tuk tour if you want to see more of Split beyond the Old Town on the same trip.
