Auschwitz-Birkenau is about two and a half hours from Wrocław by road – noticeably further than the 90-minute run from Kraków, which is why almost every guide to visiting it assumes you're based there instead. If Wrocław genuinely is your one base for the trip, it's still a real, bookable day trip. If your itinerary includes Kraków at any point, though, it's worth reading the next section before booking.
Wrocław or Kraków – which to book from
If you're visiting both cities, book this from Kraków. The drive is a third of the length, tours run far more often, prices are lower, and short-notice availability is much better – all covered in our Auschwitz from Kraków guide. The Wrocław version exists for a real reason – some visitors only build their trip around Wrocław and Lower Silesia, without a Kraków stop at all – but it's a genuinely longer, more expensive day, not a shortcut.
What the day involves
A full-day tour from Wrocław covers the return drive, a guided visit split between Auschwitz I and the much larger Birkenau camp, and a timed entry slot that avoids queuing at the gate. Expect close to ten hours door to door once the extra travel time is factored in – noticeably more than the seven to eight hours a Kraków-based visitor spends on the same visit.
Booking and timing
Book well ahead. Entry is capped everywhere, but Wrocław has a smaller pool of dedicated departures than Kraków, so the margin for booking late is thinner here, not wider. Treat this as one to lock in as soon as your dates are set rather than something to arrange once you've arrived.
It's a demanding day, physically and otherwise – most of the visit is outdoors, so dress for the weather – and it's worth leaving the rest of that day unplanned rather than scheduling anything else around it.
